African Violet presentation
Richard suggested if we wanted unusual violets that we buy them April 23rd at the Gems of Africa show and sale. Center for Urban Horticulture, 12 pm to 4 pm

Garden Club Link
Ken Slade talked about our Garden Club link on Boeing website. We need to make a change and put our link on a server. Tripod is a web hosting product. There are other websites which might be cheaper. We had a discussion as to whether we wanted to budget for a paid website.
Questions came up about a website. Do we want a web person? Will it be another position? It was stated that this should be an appointed position.
More to come on that in the future months.

REACH
The definition of REACH is Regional Events and Activities for College Hires.
This group is made up of about 600 new hires with 5 years or less with the company.
They are holding an Activities Fair on May 3rd from 11-1 pm in Everett.
They want participation from different organizations.
Ken asked if we’d like to participate.

What to do in your garden in April (Tips provided by Angela Hoard)

Perennails:
Shop nurseries for basket-of-gold, bleeding heart, columbine, rockcress, sweet woodruff, and wallflowers. Plant immediately.

Annuals:
Nurseries offer cool-season color (calendual, English daisy, pansy, snapdragon, stock sweet alyssum, viola), as well as summers annuals (impatiens, marigolds, petunias, portulaca, zinnias).

Cool-season vegetables
Set out transplants of broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, chard, kale, kohlrabi. Lettuce and spinach. Sow seeds of carrots. Peas and radishes directly in the ground, and set out see potatoes.

Repot Houseplants
A well-know supplier of garden products is promoting April 3 as National Repot your plant day.

Repotting revitalizes and promotes healthy root development. It's time to repot if:
Roots are densely wound inside the pot. - Roots grow out of the drainage holes.
Bottom leaves turn yellow and drop off. - Potting mix is faded and crusty.

Repotting in early spring has a few key advantages:
It helps maintain good plant health.
You get to renew the "tired" soil in the existing pot, and thereby give the plant a fresh supply of essential nutrients.
Stepping up to a larger pot gives the plant roots more room to grow before they enter their active growth phase.
You can use this as a time to change the style of pots you're using or as a way to enhance your home's decor with a colorful container.
You reap the emotional benefits that come with repotting; you feel good when you know you're doing something good for your plant.
Repotting in early spring is a great way to shake off the winter blahs!

Whidbey Island Garden Tour
For the first time in its ten-year history, the Whidbey Island Garden Tour is scheduled to coincide with the explosion of rhododendron blossoms and other flowers that are never seen during summer tours.
Ticket holders will have access to five unique private gardens as well as complimentary access to Meerkerk Rhododendron Gardens. The 2005 Tour is on Saturday, April 30. Don’t miss this opportunity for a peak springtime experience!
