16, 2005 Update From Richard Fairfield:
CLUB
MEETING on June 23
The meeting next week will feature a guest speaker from the Seattle African
Violet Society. The plan is for the speaker to begin promptly at 5:30
so we will have our business meeting at 5:00 and refreshments at 5:20.
I am going to try to have a slide show of what plant material of which
I have taken pictures. There will be time for plant, soil, fertilizer
and pot purchase. The speaker will be discussing both the history and
care of these plants and will be doing some demonstrations. He has mentioned
that any problem plants you want to bring in would be welcomed and worked
with. If you have an AV with a "long neck" (I think that means
the leaf crown is on top of a long stem or neck) and you want to bring
it in, he will lead us through the repotting process as well. I'm not
sure how much potting soil and/or pot he will bring, so you might want
to bring your own or you can probably buy from his supply.
Raspberries
available
This last winter I moved my raspberry patch but still have a bunch of
volunteer raspberry plants that I need to get rid of. Best choice would
be for you to come over and dig them up your self but I could probably
find time to do pot up a couple and bring them to the meeting. But we
need to do this soon, as I need to get them out. If I know you want them,
I should be able to leave them in until the BBQ next month. They are Dinkem
and Toulameen, both very tasty.
Grape
vines available
I just repotted two grape vines (4 year old seedlings). I do not know
the variety as they were from seeds after a pressing my wine in 2000:
they will be either Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Cabernet Franc. They
should do well in our climate but do not expect ripen the grapes.
If
you are interested in either of these offerings, please contact me:

Happenings
Steven Julison was asked by the Whipples to talk to us about Hydrophonics.
Steven owns and runs Rabbit Run Farm. He sells mostly to restaurants.
Steven shared some of the history about Hydrophonics and pictures
of vegetables and flowers grown in this environment. If we wanted
to get started in something simple, he had pictures of how we’d
start with a small container. Growing looks very simple. Way to go
Steven. We enjoyed your visit. Thank you. |

Prepared by Barb Beaman
Meeting
was called to order at 5:00 pm
New
Membership – None.
Activity
Calendar.
Angela briefly reviewed our Activity Calendar. We need July ??? through
Dec 2005.
July – Potluck to be at the Fairfields on July
23rd. This is a Saturday. It will be a potluck, garden tour and wine tasting.
It was not definitely decided if we would still have our Thursday meeting,
July 28th. This is to be discussed at a future meeting. Richard set a
motion and it was seconded to set a limit of $50 for food expenses with
members bringing salads, etc. The check written to Anna for Christmas
was $33. for ham and turkey.
August
– Leta LaShay to make arrangements with Emery’s Garden to
visit them. Beaman to bring refreshments and gift.
September
– Maybe a fieldtrip here? The Stoys volunteered to check into the
possibility and
report out at one of our next meetings.
October
– Open. Woods signed up for refreshments.
November
– Bonnie Whipple to have a wreath-making meeting.
Old
Business
Bank Account – Barb reported out in detail our
Savings and Checking. Balance is $821.93 in Savings; $5.07 in Checking.
Total = $827.00.
We
had a discussion on what to purchase with the money in Savings. A light
pro was suggested. Bill Whipple to check out prices. Angela to contact
other clubs to see if they would be interested in going-in together on
the purchase, then use a sign-out sheet for use. We will use $30 for a
donation to Meerkerk Gardens. Some of the funds will be used for our summer
picnic at the Fairchilds. We will revisit again in May regarding paying
$15.00 for refreshments out of club funds, which was voted for at this
meeting.

Meerkerk Rhododendron Gardens -Richard
Fairfield has organized a trip on May 14th to the gardens. This will also
be the time for the “Purple Passion Rhody” sale. The cost
will be $5.00 per person at the Gardens. Whether we have 15 people for
the tour or not, the club will pay $30 as a donation. The 15 people will
buy us a tour. Please meet at the Rec Center, May 14th, at 8:30am to share
rides and head to the Mukilteo Ferry before it gets to crowded.
Club
Dues – A final reminder that 2005 Club Dues is now due.
New
Business
Gift Cards
We have used the Gas Cards as gifts and are now in need of purchasing
more. There was a discussion as to what type of cards to purchase. Since
some wanted gas, food, gardening and phone, Barb will look for cards that
are of multi-use. Angela to ask Ron, leader for the Clubs, if we can give
cash. Angela to report out next meeting.
Reach
Project – Nothing more was done about this project.
Garden
Club Link
WebSite – Ken Slade
The software suggested was ICD for $60.00/year. We agreed that a domain
name would be BE Garden Club.org. Ken mentioned that we needed a volunteer
to take it over. His workload was such that he couldn’t do it. If
the update was going to be once-a-month, they the Stoys volunteered to
help. Angela to monitor emails on this website.
Sharetime
Sue Davis brought a basket of plants with unique watering can attached
and info on rain barrels.

April
Club Plant Sale
Plant Sale – Our first weekend of April 16th was
not so hot. The weather was bad and we didn’t do much business.
So, we decided to run it again the following weekend. Weather was better
and we had a good turnout. The left-over plants were taken to our club
meeting and sold or taken home. For those of you who took plants home,
please send me a check for what you owe. We made $129.75.

No
customers, No Worry, Garden members take on the job of removing old rodie
stump from Sue’s side yard.
